When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops. I was the awkward musician, and she was the high school queen. The only things we had in common were our music and our loneliness. Something in her eyes told me her smile wasn’t always the truth. Something in her voice gave me a hope I always wished to find. And in a flash, she was gone. Years later, she was standing in front of me on a street in New Orleans. She was different, but so was I. Life made us colder. Harder. Isolated. Caged. Even though we were different, the broken pieces of me recognized the sadness in her. Now she was back, and I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting her go again. When I first met Jasmine Greene, she came in as raindrops. When we met again, she was the darkest storm. With every new book she writes she manages to outdo herself. She’s one of the few authors that I always look forward to reading. Behind the Bars was probably one of the hardest books of hers to read because of the emotional and heartbreaking things that the characters endured. Jasmine has been home schooled up until she started high school. Her mother insists that she becomes a pop musician even though her heart bled for soul. She goes along with what her mother wants to avoid conflict. Elliott on the other hand was a super scrawny, shy teenager who was constantly bullied. Jasmine is intrigued with Elliott after she hears him play his saxophone. “We were polar opposites. We weren't meant to fall for one another, but when we blended together, we were some kind of beautiful." Jasmine makes it a point to befriend him. She is quite popular in the eyes of others but in reality, she’s just as lonely as he is. There’s such a strong connection between them and I loved reading how their friendship progressed. They are unseparatable. Jasmine puts herself in an awkward situation in order to stop Elliott from being bullied. Of course the bullying never stops and eventually it leads to more heartbreak for Elliott. There is so much more to this book, however I don’t want to ruin anyones reading experience. This is definitely a book that you need to read. I’m going to be honest and say that some of the bullying that happened was extremely hard to read.
