My story isn’t a love story … not the typical kind anyway. As a lawyer, I’m used to discovery, but I never saw this one coming. Every day, River gives me ten reasons to stay away, and then eleven reasons why I can't. Our relationship was to remain strictly business, or at least I tried. Four years of marriage, and everything with Cole has changed. I never knew two people who lived together could be so distant. But I’m not ready to give up on him. One man wants to break me. The other is just trying to get even. Both are lying to me. ***This is a standalone contemporary romance (though a little unconventional and twisted!)
Excerpt
“What?” he asks, leaning his elbows on the table. “This,” I say, gesturing between us, “would never last more than one day.” The ultra-cocky grin he had on his face the first day I met him in my office is back. “You might think that, but there’s something I know that you haven’t figured out yet.” “And what’s that?” He closes some of the space between us. “Every inch of your perfect little body is aching to know what my hands would feel like. Every. Fucking. Inch. You hold a shield up, thinking it will keep me away, but there’s nothing I don’t see.” My mouth hangs open. He’s so wrong, but he’s so right. River is unlike anyone I’ve ever met. He’s untouchable—unobtainable—and I’m married. The holes in my marriage have led me to think about things—him—in a way I normally wouldn’t. When Cole touches me, he just doesn’t reach deep enough. It’s left a void. I hate to admit it, but that’s just the way things are. Before I can come up with a rebuttal, the waitress brings us our plates and sets them in front of us. Staring down, I pretend my salad is the most interesting thing I’ve ever seen. The strawberries and blueberries make it pretty. “Did I strike a nerve?” he asks, sliding the plate of fries so they’re within my view. “You’re on every single one of them.” He laughs sadistically. “But I’m right.” “You’re wrong. I wouldn’t let you near me even if I were single.” I pick up a piping hot fry and carefully bite into it. “If you were single, I guarantee I’d have you in my condo naked right now.” Review Writing a review for Break Even has definitely been hard because there’s so much I want to say without ruining it. I thought Break Even was going to be challenging due to the subjects being outside of my usual comfort zone, but Lisa De Jong managed to write an exceptional story that made me oversee the love triangle. Break Even was suspenseful, emotional, and full of twists that kept me wanting to continue reading. I was desperate to know what would happen next. I instantly fell in love with Marley and although I didn’t agree with all her actions, I felt that reason behind her doing what she did was justifiable. I wasn’t fond of Cole due to the way he rejected Marley and the way the he made her feel insignificant. I was hoping that he would change his ways until I was introduced to River. I was drawn to River immediately and although he was cocky as hell, that’s why I fell in love with him. It was understandable why Marley was drawn to him. There’s so much more that I wish I could say other than that you really need to read Break Even. Without doubt, this is a book that will keep you interested. I certainly look forward to reading more from Lisa De Jong. Dinner was going great. We talked about future plans and vacations my parents want to take now that Dad is semi-retired. That all changed when dessert was being served, and Kegan got that look in his eye.
“So, KayKay? You told mom about the woman you have living with you yet?” Kegan says like it’s just another piece of everyday news to discuss at the table. From the corner of my eye, I see both of my parents’ heads snap up and look at me. Center of attention, a position Kegan has always been better at than me. This is his payback for not spilling it about London when he asked. My mind is already thinking of things to do to get back at him; that’s if I don’t strangle him first. I narrow my eyes at him before speaking. “I do have a house guest,” I respond with as much nonchalance as I can muster. “Houseguest,” Kegan huffs. “She’s in the guest room,” I reply and look at my mother. My explanation does nothing to keep the happiness off of her face. Seems I’m as transparent to her as I am to Kegan, and she didn’t show up at the house like he did and see her braless in a tank top and yoga pants. “And where do you sleep?” Kegan says just before popping an overly large bite of pie into his mouth. My jaw clenches uncontrollably, and my left eye ticks periodically with my pulse. Fucker. “How did you meet?” My Aunt Diana asks thinking she’s saving me from Kegan’s questions when she’s actually only making it worse. Kegan drops his fork on his plate loudly and sits backs far in his chair. “Oh, I love this part of the story.”

Jade
Jade’s young life was tough. After her mother died during childbirth and her father could no longer look after her, she was placed in foster care where she stayed for the next ten years. She grew up feeling unloved and unwanted as she was passed around from one screwed up home to the next. Things began to look up for her when she was adopted by a wealthy socialite at the age of eleven. Sometimes though, things aren’t always what they seem. Jade didn’t know it at the time, but her new adoptive mother had big plans for her, and spent the next seven years grooming Jade for that role. Jade learnt early in life that she couldn’t rely on anyone but herself. Instead of letting her circumstances beat her, she took all the negatives she’d been dealt, and used them to her advantage. She grew up to be a strong, successful, determined and independent woman. She was a loner by choice. The only thing lacking in her life was companionship and love. She’d never experienced it, so she didn’t know what she was missing, until she had a one-night-stand with a handsome stranger. One night, that would change everything.
Brock
Brock grew up privileged. He had everything going for him. Money, looks, charm, success and an endless array of beautiful women. He wasn’t interested in commitment. To him women were easy. They practically threw themselves at his feet. All they wanted was to do something nobody had ever managed before. Snare the hot, rich bachelor. Then he met Jade. She was like a breath of fresh air. A challenge. Nothing like the women he was used too. Their one night together ignited something within him. A burning desire to own her, possess her, but Jade had other plans. Nobody says no to Brock Weston, nobody.
He’s left wondering about a woman he knows he can never have. But, when fate brings them together again, will he get what he wants? Will he be able to claim the unattainable? Or will her secrets crush him, and destroy any chance they have of being together?
